Maybe you’re just starting with makeup and aren’t sure where to begin. Or – you’ve never worn it before but want to start. Learning how to apply makeup can be intimidating for various reasons, but it doesn’t have to be! Check out our amazing makeup tutorial guide designed for beginners to step up their makeup skills with ease and confidence!
Our makeup tutorial contains 11 Steps to follow:
Step 1: Prep your skin
It is important to wash and moisturize your skin before applying makeup and perfecting your technique. Always cleanse and prep your face with the appropriate moisturizer for your skin type. What’s the reason? Without it, the makeup will never lay properly.
You won’t achieve an even, smooth finish if your skin isn’t properly prepped. Instead, the foundation will become heavy and gravitate toward your skin’s dry areas, while your concealer will become cakey.
Step 2: Apply primer
Whether you plan to apply a thin coat of foundation or a full face of makeup, primer is an essential first step in makeup. Using primer under your makeup will prolong the life of your look.
Start by squeezing a small amount of primer onto your fingertips or your preferred makeup brush or sponge. Pro Tip: A little amount goes a long way. In particular, start by applying a dime-sized volume of primer to the middle of your face and slowly work your way out to your cheeks, forehead, and chin.
Step 3: Apply foundation
Finding the right foundation shade for your skin is priority number one when it comes to foundation. The right foundation color can make all the difference. So, how do you go about it? The colors of the foundation should be checked against the jawline. If the foundation disappears without blending, you’ve found your true match.
Start by blending the liquid foundation outwards from the center of your face. Be sure to buff in your foundation when you brush it over your skin. Some people tend to stipple a damp sponge over their foundation to help it get through the lines and creases, creating a smoother, more even texture. Moreover, certain makeup brushes are also excellent for buffing foundation onto the face.
Step 4: CONCEALER
Apply light concealer under the eyes with a wet sponge or beauty brush to reduce the presence of dark under-eye circles and create a glowing, bright look. You can learn the tricks to apply it flawlessly in several makeup tutorials.
Apply concealer directly to problem areas if you’re using it to conceal blemishes.
Place small dots in the following areas to highlight your face with a liquid or cream concealer:
- Horizontally around the center of your forehead
- Down the middle of the nose
- Under the eyes
- Just under your bottom lip, in a curving arch at the top of your chin
Blend it softly onto the surrounding skin, and always use a foundation or setting powder to cover it up.
Step 5: Apply setting powder
Swipe your setting powder brush or velvet puff onto it and tap it to remove any excess. Before applying it to the face, make sure it’s evenly distributed. Next, press it onto your face to avoid moving the makeup around during the application process. Focus on places that seem to need a touch-up during the day (typically the t-zone).
STEP 6: BRONZER
All year long, bronzer can give your skin that sun-kissed glow. To add a golden tan to your skin, use a bronzer brush. Bronzer brushes are made with more bristles and even more tightly placed together. This means you get the best out of your colorful bronzer with every swipe.
Where to Apply Bronzer:
Apply your bronzer in the shape of a number “3” on both sides of your face once you’ve found the right shade. Start with your forehead, then brush the bronzer down your cheeks and across your jawline, all the way to your chin. Don’t forget to blend it into your neck. Repeat for the opposite side.
STEP 7: BLUSH
For decades, flushed cheeks have been a mainstay of beauty glamour and makeup tutorials. If you want to bring more color and vibrancy to your complexion, blush may be the key.
Apply the blush with a thick brush with plenty of bristles to get the best out of each blush sweep.
STEP 8: HIGHLIGHTER
Every makeup look benefits from a touch of glam and glow from the right highlighter. Especially, if you like a more natural look or something bold and stunning, a highlighter can complement your makeup.
Where to Apply Highlighter:
After you’ve created a seamless canvas for your new foundation routine, map out the parts on your face you want to highlight.
Apply a highlighter to the following areas first:
- Down the bridge of the nose
- On the tops of the cheekbones
- At the inner corners of the eyes
- On your brow bone
- The indent above your upper lip (also called the Cupid’s Bow)
- The center of your forehead
- The center of your chin
Step 9: Apply eyeliner
Use a black or brown pencil and apply along the rim of your upper lash line in short strokes.
- Apply a black or brown pencil in short strokes around the rim of the upper lash line.
- If you’re just beginning with eyeliner, gel eyeliner can be easier to apply than a pencil.
- Lift the upper lid with one hand and apply it with the other when looking down into a mirror.
- As you gain confidence in applying makeup, one of the ways you can experiment is with eyeliner. Color, texture, and line application can all have a significant effect on your eyes’ appearance. Play around!
Step 10: Apply lip gloss or lipstick
Dab the lip color into the middle of your upper and lower lips as though you’re going to plant a kiss. This first application can be straight from the tube; then, blend outwards with your fingers, adding color as needed with your fingertips.
- If the lips are chapped, apply lip balm before applying lip gloss. Apply a thin coat of lip balm and gently buff them with a warm, moist washcloth. Leave the balm to absorb before applying lipstick or gloss.
- For beginners, the lips are an excellent place to add color and variety to the makeup routine without stress over the application technique. You can use anything from a gentle, barely-there gloss to a creamy, fire-engine red.
Step 11: SETTING SPRAY & SETTING POWDER
Setting spray or powder can be used as the final touch to your makeup tutorial. If you want your makeup to last all day without greasing, creasing, or shining, you must invest in a high-quality setting solution.
Setting sprays are suitable for all skin types and can be used to set a range of looks, whether you’re wearing light coverage or a full face of makeup. Setting spray holds your makeup in place, reducing the need for reapplication and keeping your makeup looking perfect for hours.
