Applying makeup is not meant to be rocket science. Once you’ve found the perfect foundation for your skin tone, the color of your lips that makes your teeth whiter, and the perfect blush location to make your face glow, your own beauty should be a breeze. That’s what we usually begin thinking—when we turn a certain age and things like black spots and crow’s feet begin to show up on our skin. Should our makeup change as we get older? How am I meant to mask fine lines and wrinkles? And how can I reapply my sunscreen without losing my makeup? There are plenty of questions about makeup which we all want answers to.
Like Kim Kardashian, how to get the perfect liquid line, contour, and the perfect red lipstick for every skin tone? The list is going on and on. Because we know that your pressing questions need answers, we’ve connected up with top makeup artists from our favorite brands to give us all their secrets.
Here are the most often asked questions that makeup artists get regularly and their never-ending answers.
1. How to get the right foundation shade?
Answer:
The best way to make sure your foundation shade is a hit is to go to the nearest makeup counter and try it on. Many devices are really reliable, but you’re still going to want to double-check on your skin. The easiest way to do this is on the jawline or deep skin tones; try from the cheek’s center to the jawline. Undertone is everything, so make sure that if you’re on the yellow side, you’re on the foundation of the same family, whether you’re on the pink or neutral side.
2. I have hooded eyes. What are those tricks for having excellent eye makeup?
Answer:
You might consider hooded eyelids to be troublesome when it comes to makeup. But we happen to think they’re prime canvases for bold or dramatic looks. To create the look, you’ll only need to change some of your application methods.
There are a lot of tweaks you can do when you apply eyeshades to stop the dreaded moment when you open your eyes all the way and find that you can’t even see any of your hard work. First thing: Keep your eyes slightly open and look straight into the mirror throughout the application (instead of tilting your head upward and leaning inward). Then, make sure to expand your outward and upward blending from the outer corners of the eyes to the temples.
3. Foundation or concealer first?
Answer:
A very common makeup question that you might find confusing. Although several beginner makeup videos will tell you to conceal the under-eye circles, acne marks, and redness first, the pros have a different method. First, apply the foundation, then go back and touch up places that require more cover-up with the concealer. That includes the under-eye concealer after all the makeup is on. That way, you can wipe up the eye shadow dust and do not have a build-up substance on the thinnest skin of your face.
4. Any tips for filling in my eyebrows naturally?
Answer:
Always begin by brushing your brows up and out so that you can see the most natural shape and direction of hair growth. Then, start filling the arch in your brows. This is going to help you stop over-filling. It’s commonly thought you should start in the front. But the brows appear to be naturally fuller in the front. By starting at the fullest part of your brow, you’re going to play a catch-up game while you continue to fill your brows to the tail. Another thing to bear in mind is to apply it in short, hair-like strokes. By doing this, you’re mimicking your natural hair, and you’re going to be able to follow the direction in which it grows.
5. Why isn’t my blush last?
Answer:
The order of your makeup application makes all the difference in the longevity of the skin product. If you add blush after the foundation without setting the foundation, you promote your skin’s oils to reach the blush and begin breaking it down easily. Setting up your foundation with a powder setting creates a barrier between it and your blush. Plus, the blush can be spread smoother and more evenly, without dragging or skipping on the skin due to the “powder cushion” you’ve created.
6. Why do I have to wash my makeup off?
Answer:
Your pores will be enlarged if you usually sleep with your makeup. At night, the skin repairs and rebuilds, and you need to give it a chance to fight on a clean slate. Skin cell mitosis is at its peak between 11 p.m. and 12 a.m. So, make sure layers of foundation and powder do not inhibit it.
7. How can I keep my makeup from drying out throughout the day?
Answer:
The easiest way to keep makeup from drying out and flaking every day is to be careful with your skincare. Exfoliate your skin at least once a week (more if your skin is oily) and apply a drop of serum to your foundation. The final move is to spray your skin with a vitamin spray to adjust and hydrate your skin.
8. How should I apply my makeup with sunscreen? And what’s the right way to apply again after I’ve got my makeup on?
Answer:
This is a very common makeup question that every woman has in their mind. When we put it on sunscreen, we usually put it on a newly cleansed and moisturized face and leave it to the skin before applying any makeup. Nowadays, several bases contain sunscreen, making the application an all-in-one process. You can always apply it once again, patting it softly on your face so that you don’t smudge the makeup. You’ve got to be especially careful about the eye area.
9. Why does my makeup look so different once I step outside?
Answer:
Lighting is everything! If you get ready in your shower, as many do, you’re likely to have warmer overhead lighting in a small area that often doesn’t have a window. This will make your skin look more golden. And if you walk out into a more even, cooler light, those colors would be too intense. If possible, apply makeup in front of a natural daylight window.
10. How often should I wash my makeup brushes?
Answer:
Ideally, once a week but more likely, once in two weeks. You can use a quick-dry sanitizing cleaner and a color switch sponge in between more serious washing sessions.
