In today’s face-paced world, stress and anxiety is an unavoidable part of life. Motivational speakers and gurus from around the world have talked about days like these; days when you are so overwhelmed by stress that you can’t think straight or function at well, days when all you want to do is shut out the world, relax your nerves, catch a breath and have a moment to yourself. Those who recognize the first signs of these stressors and inevitabilities and deal with it healthily and productively end up leading a happy and successful life. But for those who struggle to get away from the heavy toll that the modern world takes on us, perhaps a reassessment of one’s priorities is to help them reach a place where they can find inner peace.
What is inner peace?
Inner peace is a state of mind where you are no longer crammed by the daily thoughts, fears, and worries. It is a state when that voice inside your head finally takes a rest, and those knots start to untangle themselves slowly and gradually, thus allowing you to recognize, appreciate and enjoy the little things in life that bring you peace and serenity.
How does one attain inner peace?
As humans, it is in our nature to be impatient and figure out all the answers right away; to a certain extent, it only seems logical. But forcing yourself to figure out all the answers can sometimes get in the way of your mental and emotional well-being, hence hindering finding inner peace. Instead, focus on the positive pulls of life, take each moment as it comes, and make the most of it; try living the moment rather than overthinking and concentrate on ways to stay within the moment. Allow your life to take time to unfold itself as it pleases rather than the other way around. To help you further attain inner peace, below are a few quick tips that you can incorporate in your daily lives to help you on your way towards finding your inner calm.
Expressing gratitude
One of the biggest mistakes most of us tend to make is being ungrateful for what we have. For most parts of our lives, we tend to be so fixated on vocalizing the negatives in our life that we hardly focus on noticing all the good that we have and being thankful for it. Changing one’s outlook on life and focusing on all the interests around you, no matter how little it may be, is an excellent place to start your journey towards finding inner peace.
Keep a journal on your nightstand and just before you are about to retire for the day, take ten minutes to reflect on the entire day that has just passed you by—express gratitude for the positive. Make sure to write these down in your journal with any or every thought that crosses your mind. (Remember! Your thoughts are the blueprints of your life. You may not be able to control circumstances around you at times, but you can most certainly control your thoughts.)
The power of Solitude
Some of life’s greatest lessons are learned when you are alone. This is because you finally have a chance to look inside yourself and allow yourself to be with the real you. To do so, when you wake up in the morning, find a place where you can practice solitude. Simply sit down in a relaxed manner and focus all of your attention on your breathing. Try not to think about anything else. The only thing that should be on your mind during these five minutes is breathing. After the five minutes are up, you will notice a very different kind of inner peace within you, and over time you will start to see a feeling of content and how your bond is strengthening with yourself.
Practicing mindfulness
Mindfulness is simply the ability to observe the world around us without any distractions.
In other words, it is the ability to be consciously aware of whom we are and what we are doing without being engulfed by all the noise and clutter around us. Many studies tend to describe it as the intentional and accepting focus of someone’s attention on the sensations, thoughts, and emotions that are going on in that exact moment. However, just like any other habit, learning to master the art of practicing mindfulness takes time, practice, and patience.
To do so, start by setting aside just five minutes of your day. You can do this with a timer to keep track of how much time you spend on this exercise. During those five minutes, you need to focus all of the attention that you have on your breathing. Try not to think about anything else or worry about anything that is going on around you or in your life, or pay any attention to anything else. The only thing that should be in your universe during these five minutes is breathing.
You will have to be prepared to catch your mind when it tries to wander off, which it will, and keep bringing the sense back to where it needs to be. You will find that focusing your concentration like this, in the beginning, is going to be difficult, but the more that you do it, the easier it can become.
This exercise allows you to de-clutter your mind and get rid of things that aren’t your problem, to begin with. You will be able to get the clarity and find the inner peace you want, and soon things will be back on the right track, and you will notice a spark of creativity igniting inside you. Over time and with practice, you can choose to extend the amount of time you are doing this technique to work the best for you.
Let it flow
Just remember its okay to face setbacks in life too. You’ve had days where you were a hundred percent productive, and everything made sense. When you let go of control, things eventually start to flow. So stop forcing results. Allow them to come to you naturally.
Remember! Part of finding your inner peace realizes that nothing is constant. Life is constantly changing, and so are you. You must learn to adapt so that you do not fall prey to life’s daily stressors and lose your calm over it. Allow yourself to enjoy the little things in life that bring you joy, instead of focusing on the negatives that cause distress to your mental and emotional well-being.
